Rainier Investment Management is an investment management firm based out of Seattle. The company was established in 1989 and has been independently owned since 1991. Rainier Investment Management has grown from its inception to now have 57 employees of which 14 are investment professionals headed by President and Principal James M. Ridgeway. The company utilizes a bottom up investment approach with a fundamental methodology, investing in the growth stocks of selected companies that have “superior growth, attractive relative valuations, financial strength and trading liquidity.” Rainier Investment Management provides a variety of U.S. Equity, fixed income, and international portfolio management and invests in all major markets on a global scale. The company invests most heavily in the consumer discretionary and information technology sectors, which each make up over a fifth of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the health care, finance, consumer staples, and industrials sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. Rainier Investment Management currently holds over $6.1 billion in total assets under management spread across 55 accounts, all of which are discretionary accounts except for 4 that make up approximately $880 million of its held assets. Both of its total number of accounts and total assets under management have been decreasing in recent years with its total assets having been once as high as over $19 billion in assets under management. Rainier Investment Management mainly caters to pension and profit sharing plans, which alone makes up over a third of its client base, and also provides its services to investment companies, pooled investment vehicles, charities, corporations, state and municipal entities, and insurance companies, among others, in order of decreasing allocation. Rainier Investment Management currently offers a wide variety of mutual funds including its Large Cap Equity, Mid Cap Equity, Intermediate Fixed Income, and High Yield funds, among others.
