Go through Charlie Munger lifetime

1924

Charlie Munger was born on Jan. 1, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Florence “Toody” Russel and Alfred Case Munger.

1941

Charlie Munger attended the University of Michigan, where he studied mathematics. Munger also joined the Sigma Phi Society.

1943

Munger left school to enlist in the Army Air Corps, where he became a second lieutenant. He also developed an “important skill”: card playing.

1948

Munger graduated magna cum laude with a J.D. at Harvard Law School without finishing college. Munger was also a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.

1959

Munger moved back to Omaha, where he met Warren Buffett at a dinner party. Buffett and Munger started discussing investing ideas; Buffett eventually convinced Munger to quit practicing law and begin his own investing firm.

1962-1976

Munger operated Wheeler, Munger and Co., an investment counseling firm. The partnership returned on average 24.3% per year, outperforming the Dow’s return of 6.4% per year.

1965

Munger encouraged Buffett to follow an investing approach emphasizing high-quality stocks. Berkshire invested in See’s Candy.

1978

Munger became vice-chairman of Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Munger sought quality and encouraged Buffett to follow the same investing approach.

1984-2011

Munger served as chairman and CEO of Wesco Financial, which began as a savings and loan association. Wesco acquired several Wesco, including Mutual Savings, Precision Steel, CORT Furniture Leasing and Kansas Bankers Surety Company.

1979

Wesco acquired Precision Steel for approximately $15 million. The company operates a steel-warehousing business with headquarters in Chicago and other offices in Los Angeles and Charlotte, North Carolina.

1985

Wesco launched in co-venture with Berkshire a Nebraska-chartered insurance company Wesco Financial Insurance Company (Wes-FIC). Wes-FIC operated the Fireman’s Fund from 1985-89.

2013-2023

Charlie Munger served as chairman of the Daily Journal.
