Microchip Technology Incorporated (MCHP, Financial) has announced its decision to close the manufacturing operations at its Tempe, Arizona wafer fabrication facility, known as "Fab 2." This facility, which produces 8-inch wafers and supports various manufacturing process technologies, will see its operations transitioned to the company's other facilities in Oregon and Colorado. These facilities have sufficient clean room space to accommodate the transition and potential future expansions.
The closure of Fab 2 is part of a strategic initiative to manage high inventory levels and optimize operational capacity. Microchip Technology anticipates that the shutdown will be completed by the September 2025 quarter, resulting in annual cash savings of approximately $90 million. However, due to existing inventory levels, the financial benefits from the closure are expected to materialize starting in the June 2026 quarter.
The transition is expected to impact approximately 500 employees. In terms of financial implications, the company forecasts near-term restructuring costs to range between $3 million and $8 million, with potential additional costs up to $15 million. These estimates are subject to refinement as more information becomes available, and actual results may vary.
Microchip Technology has not yet determined if any accelerated depreciation or impairment charges will be recorded as part of this restructuring. The company remains committed to managing the transition effectively to retain key employees and customers while realizing the anticipated synergies and benefits.
