Meta Plans $10 Billion Global Subsea Cable Network

Meta Platforms is planning a massive $10 billion subsea cable network spanning over 40,000 kilometers globally. This initiative aims to support its platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which consume a significant portion of global internet traffic. The planned cable, forming a "W" shape on the world map, will connect the U.S. East Coast, South Africa, India, Australia, and the U.S. West Coast.

The project is in its early stages, with more details expected by 2025. Initial budget estimates start at $2 billion, potentially exceeding $100 billion as the project progresses. Due to limited companies capable of such infrastructure, like SubCom, and existing commitments with other tech giants like Google, the network's operation is expected to take several years.

Meta aims to own this network entirely, a shift from previous collaborations. The network could enhance service quality outside North America, avoid geopolitical tensions, and potentially support AI developments in India, where computing costs are lower.
