Amici Capital, LLC is a hedge fund sponsor based out of New York City. The company is owned by its employees and has been managed by Paul Evan Orlin, who retains an active role in the company acting as its General Partner and CIO, in 2004. Amici Capital can trace its history back to the late Alex Porter who originally launched Amici Associates LP in 1976, establishing a “culture of integrity and transparency.” The current CIO Paul Orlin joined the company in 1993, bringing his portfolio management expertise. Amici Capital was formerly known as Porter Orlin LLC before changing its name to its current name and has expanded since its inception to have an additional office in San Ramon, California. The company conducts its research internally and externally, utilizing a fundamental methodology to make its investment decisions across public equity markets on a global scale. Amici Capital invests with a bottom up approach. The company invests most heavily in the health care sector, which alone makes up almost a third of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the information technology, finance, consumer discretionary, materials, and transports sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. Amici Capital operates with 27 employees of which 11 are investment professionals. The company oversees over $3 billion in total assets under management spread across 10 total accounts, all of which are discretionary. Although Amici Capital’s total number of accounts has more or less stayed the same in recent years, its total assets under management has been increasing, growing significantly from $1 billion back in 2010 to three times that amount today. Amici Capital currently caters exclusively to pooled investment vehicles and takes advisory fees in the form of a percentage of assets, various performance based fees, and expense pass through fees.
